Juan Mata buys shares in new MLS club San Diego FC

Juan Mata has made a rather unexpected move by joining the investment group for San Diego FC, following in the footsteps of David Beckham as an MLS team owner. This marks the first time an active player has become a partner for an MLS team as Mata is still currently playing for Western Sydney Wanderers in Australia’s A-League. San Diego FC is set to debut in the Western Conference of MLS in 2025.

All About Mata's New Team

In May 2023, the expansion slot was awarded to San Diego, surpassing Las Vegas, which had received support from the owners of Aston Villa. Although the league is set to launch in 2025, Juan Mata will not be able to participate as a player, as he already signed with Sydney FC as a free agent in September. Impressively, Mata has transitioned into a part-owner role while continuing his professional career, similar to the path taken by David Beckham who took to the role after retiring professionally.

The newest club, San Diego FC, is co-owned by British-Egyptian billionaire Mohamed Mansour and a Californian Native American Tribe who reportedly paid a capital of $500m for the slot.

Mata said: “Joining San Diego FC as a partner is an exciting opportunity to help build something truly special in a city and league that are experiencing incredible growth. The commitment of both this Club and Right to Dream to community impact, excellence, and a vision for long-term success aligns perfectly with my own values. I look forward to contributing my experience and passion for the game and working alongside everyone here to build a Club that inspires both on and off the pitch.”
