Arne Slot has taken a proactive step concerning the future of goalkeepers Alisson Becker and Caoimhin Kelleher with the recent acquisition of Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia.
The Reds have successfully reached an agreement with the La Liga club for Mamardashvili's signing. Importantly, the talented 24-year-old will remain on loan with Valencia for the remainder of the season, allowing him to gain valuable experience before making the transition to Anfield next season.
Kelleher and Alisson's future is in doubt
After signing Mamardashvili, Kelleher's future has become a topic of interest once again. Last summer, he was linked with several clubs after playing a pivotal role in helping the Meyersiders secure their 10th Carabao Cup title and achieve Champions League qualification.
At 25 years old, Kelleher has proven to be a dependable backup to Alisson Becker in recent seasons. Nonetheless, he has expressed a desire to seek opportunities elsewhere to become a first-choice goalkeeper.
Liverpool had the opportunity to consider offers from Premier League rivals for Kelleher last summer, demonstrating the value he brought to the team after making 26 appearances in the previous season due to an injury to first-choice goalkeeper Alisson Becker.
Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown has indicated that Kelleher is set to discuss his future with Arne Slot, which will be an important step before he makes a final decision about his next move.
Caoimhin Kelleher has made a notable impact this season with eight appearances for Liverpool, conceding just five goals. The team dominates the Premier League and Champions League, boasting an impressive record of 15 wins in 17 matches across all competitions.
While the spotlight often shines on their attacking prowess, particularly the revitalized Mohamed Salah, it is their resolute defence that stands as the backbone of their remarkable success.
Mark Schwarzer's take on the update
"The thing about that is, and we talked about it at the Euros as well, his strong point isn't playing with the ball at his feet, Mamardashvili," said Schwarzer.
"That’s why I was a little bit surprised by Liverpool signing him. I don’t understand it because I don’t think he is the blueprint of goalkeeper that they would have, like Alisson or even Kelleher with the ball at his feet, because they are very, very good.” he added.
