In the meantime, Barcelona is actively engaging with De Jong to explore the possibility of a contract extension, aiming to restructure his substantial salary in a way that could benefit both parties. However, the Dutch midfielder has thus far declined the club's offers.

De Jong set to leave Barca broke?

Frenkie De Jong is set to become a free agent in 2026, and if he does not extend his contract by next year, Barcelona might face significant financial implications while potentially losing him without receiving a transfer fee.

Planes could be playing a pivotal role in helping Barcelona navigate this situation if his Saudi club is willing to meet the financial requirements for De Jong.

On the other hand, this move could benefit De Jong, as he would have the opportunity to secure a lucrative salary with Ittihad.

Planes were staying at the same hotel as the Barcelona players during the tournament and were reported to have engaged in discussions with the Dutchman’s agents.

Recent reports indicate that Barcelona will refrain from discussing a new contract with Frenkie de Jong until June. The club is frustrated with De Jong's agents and has clarified that negotiations will not take place until the summer. If an agreement is not reached, the Netherlands international will be placed on the transfer market.

Should De Jong choose to remain and fulfil his contract, Barcelona is prepared to exclude him from the squad for the entire season. The club's position, articulated by president Joan Laporta, is cemented: Players with one year remaining on their contracts must either secure a renewal or be sold before the new season begins.
