Jose Mourinho's hopes of leading Fenerbahce into the revamped Champions League ended Tuesday when the Turkish team were knocked out in the third qualifying round by Lille. Lille advanced as the 3-2 winners after two legs as Canada striker Jonathan David converted a penalty in the 118th minute to secure a 1-1 draw after extra time.

Fenerbahce scored in the first minute of second-half stoppage time through Bafode Diakite's own goal to go 1-0 ahead in the second leg in Istanbul and take the match to extra time. Lille won the first leg 2-1. To try to win Fenerbahce's first Turkish league championship since 2014, Mourinho was hired in June at an annual compensation of $11 million. In the Champions League, which he won with Porto in 2004 and Inter Milan in 2010, he was trying to bring his new side into the redesigned 36-team league stage.

Mourinho previously oversaw Roma's Europa League final loss to Sevilla last year, which was marred by poor discipline, reckless challenges, and touchline feuds. The game was ruined by a total of 13 yellow cards, and Mourinho lambasted Anthony Taylor's officiating performance as the two sides battled furiously.

He brought up the event again when he questioned the refereeing in Fenerbahce's Champions League defeat to Lille. In response to his side's defeat, the former Chelsea Premier League championship winner oddly dismissed the outcome, declaring his team would 'never win the Champions League'.

We can do great Europa League - Jose Mourinho

According to Daily Mail, Jose Mourinho stated this after losing the match, 'We lose economically because the Champions League obviously is an important boost to the club and we lose the chance to play against the biggest teams in the world,' Mourinho said. 'But we would never win the Champions League. We would never reach the Champions League final. Never.' 'But we go to Europa League and in Europa League if… if… I don't want to say the rest. I prefer to stay on the ifs. But if we can do a great Europa League,' he added.

Meanwhile, after losing the UEFA Champions League qualifying round with Fenerbahce the team will now play in the Europa League where he won the title with Manchester United. However, since joining Fenerbahce as manager he quickly settled down into the environment and aims to win the Superlig title which the fans have been waiting for a decade.
