At the tender age of just 17, Pau Cubarsi has had an incredible breakthrough season with FC Barcelona, solidifying himself as the team's core defender. Cubarsi, who debuted in January more than three months ago, has since developed into a vital player for Xavi Hernandez's squad.

With a €10 million release clause and a contract that expires in 2026, the 17-year-old is one of the Catalan heavyweights that the team has been trying to extend. Now, significant news on Pau Cubarsi's Barcelona contract renewal has been released by Mundo Deportivo. The 17-year-old is reportedly just a few steps away from agreeing to a new, long-term contract with Barcelona, which will greatly benefit the Catalan powerhouses.

Regarding the financial terms of the agreement, the two sides have already come to an understanding. The football player will now sign a contract with a growing income; the only thing left to decide is how long the deal will last.  Although Cubarsi would love to extend for five more years, Barça wants to extend for six, and they are certain that this won't be a problem, based on negotiation sources the magazine contacted.

According to the article, Barcelona is also using the Lamine Yamal equation with Cubarsi, meaning that they will adjust his existing contract to reflect the role he has taken on in the team thus far. Additionally, the defender is going to sign the contract extension that runs until 2030 after he enters the age of majority in January of next year.

FC Barcelona set to put massive release clause once again

With this signing, Barça avoided all the teams vying for him in an attempt to persuade him to go while also guaranteeing the future of a young talent who is already an important member of the team. All of the major clubs in Europe were interested in signing him because of his outstanding talent and projection as well as the fact that his contract was for a mere ten million euros. Cubarsi will now be subject to an expensive clause.

Similar to Gavi, Ronald Araujo, Pedri, or Lamine Yamal, Barça intended him to become part of the €1 billion club in order to demonstrate their trust in him as well as provide him the recognition he deserves.
