The UEFA Euro 2024 has already begun on Friday, as Germany won their opening game against Scotland. On an action-packed Saturday, Spain played Croatia in the all-important Group B game. La Roja excellently started the game as they started their pressing game and played their typical positional football. Luka Modric’s side after soaking in the pressure controlled the game, but they were punished for their line defence.

Against the run of play, Luis de la Fuente’s side took advantage of their high line with a brilliant defence-splitting ball from Fabian Ruiz leading the Spanish captain Alvaro Morata open in a 1v1 situation against Dominik Livakovic with the former Juventus forward did not fail to break the deadlock in the 29th minute of the game.

The 2012 Euro champions kept on the pressure and then three minutes later Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Fabian Ruiz made it 2-0 as the Spanish No.8 danced through the defenders of Croatia in a small space and put it past Livakovic. In the added time of the first half, Lamine Yamal delivered a sensational cross towards Dani Carvajal who did not fail to touch it to make it 3-0 in the first 45 minutes.

Spain cruise over Croatia

The second half began in favour of Spain as they had a three-goal lead in the first half. However, Croatia tried their best to open the scoring and they had the chances as well but they failed to capitalise on the chance. A solid block from Marc Cucurella to deny Andrej Kramaric post the hour of the game.

As Croatia pushed the numbers forward their defence was left wide open, with Pedri and Morata combining, and the former finding his FC Barcelona teammate Lamine Yamal wide open in the wing inside the box as the winger was denied by Livakovic’s diving right-hand to make history in the game on the weekend.

Modric was taken off after the 66th minute and in the 78th minute of the game the losing side was awarded a penalty after Rodri tripped Bruno Petkovic inside the six-yard, but the striker was denied from the spot by Unai Simon and then a left low cross by Ivan Perisic on the return was tapped in by him but the goal was ruled out due to offside and the Spanish team kept a clean sheet.
