Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano "Dibu" Martínez has faced a suspension for two matches by FIFA's disciplinary committee on account of offensive behavior and violation of the principles of fair play. As a result, he will be unable to participate in Argentina's World Cup qualifiers against Venezuela on October 10 and Bolivia on October 15.
Why "Dibu" Faced Suspension?
FIFA has determined that Martínez breached its code of conduct by gesturing with a replica of the Copa América trophy toward his groin area during the 2022 FIFA World Cup after the win against Chile on Sept. 5.
The Aston Villa player also faced consequences for his behaviour following Argentina's 2-1 loss to Colombia on September 10, when he forcefully slammed away a cameraman's equipment following the fixture.
Jhonny Jackson, the operator, claimed to Colombian media that he was "assaulted" by Martínez, expressing his intense anger.
Argentina Football Association disagrees with FIFA's Verdict
The Argentine Football Federation (AFA) reported that the player and the association provided a defence before FIFA imposed the sanctions.
"It should be noted that the Argentine Football Association expresses its absolute disagreement with the decision taken by the FIFA disciplinary committee," the AFA in a statement.
Team Argentina sit at the Top of the Standings
Argentine national team currently leads Conmebol's World Cup qualifying standings with 18 points in eight matches, followed by second-place Colombia, who are at a two-point deficit. The top six teams from Conmebol will qualify directly for the 2026 tournament, and the seventh-place team will participate in an inter-confederation playoff match to secure a ticket to the competition.
