Argentine Goalkeeper Emiliano "Dibu" Martínez made headlines when he inadvertently struck a TV camera that was following him shortly after Argentina's national team suffered a 2-1 defeat to Colombia in the eighth round of the South American qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup, held in Barranquilla.

Martínez, known for his occasional lack of composure, exchanged greetings with several Colombian players on the field, including his Aston Villa teammate Jhon Jader Durán, before impulsively swatting at the camera and then continuing on as if nothing had occurred. The incident was captured by cameras broadcasting the match in Barranquilla and swiftly circulated on social media, where some Colombian fans interpreted it as a display of poor sportsmanship.

With their 2-1 victory, Colombia not only avenged their Copa America finals loss but also put an end to a 31-year winless streak against Argentina at the Metropolitano stadium in Barranquilla.

Colombia avenged Copa America's Finals Loss

In the 25th minute, Yerson Mosquera scored for Colombia with a close-range header, followed by an equalizer from Argentina in the 48th minute after Nico Gonzalez intercepted a pass from Rodríguez. Rodríguez later redeemed himself with a penalty in the 60th minute, awarded after a video review, securing the win at the Metropolitano Stadium. The absence of Lionel Messi, who typically provides the assists for the duo, meant that Argentina's strikers Lautaro Martinez and Julian Alvarez failed to threaten the Colombian defence lines.

“It is a great win against an Argentina team that has won it all. The weather was tough, it was so hot, but we had an excellent match. It is a fair win," Rodriguez said.
