Ecuador footballer Marco Angulo passes away at 22

Ecuador's national team footballer, Marco Angulo passed away, as he succumbed to the injuries sustained in a horrific car accident last month.

Tragically, Ecuador and LDU Quito footballer Marco Angulo has passed away at the age of 22 due to injuries sustained in a car accident.

The incident occurred in the early hours of October 7 in Ecuador’s capital, Quito. Angulo, a promising young midfielder with three caps for the Ecuador national team, was quickly transported to a hospital where he underwent surgery to alleviate pressure in his head caused by the trauma.

Marco Angulo faced a car accident 

Marco Angulo had suffered a lung contusion that necessitated the placement of a chest tube, but fortunately, there was no active bleeding detected. In the 35 days since the incident, messages of love and support have poured in for Angulo, highlighting the impact he had on those around him. However, it was announced this morning that he has tragically passed away due to his injuries. 

At approximately 4:30 am, the Ford Explorer driven by Angulo reportedly collided with a metal structure on the Ruminahui highway in southeast Quito. 

Angulo's career overview 

Angulo had been having a productive loan spell with Ecuadorian club LDU Quito after moving from MLS side FC Cincinnati earlier this year. During his time with LDU Quito, the talented former Independiente Juniors player made 16 appearances across all competitions. His last match was against Orense in Ecuador’s top flight on October 6, just a day before the unfortunate incident.

In November 2022, Angulo received his first call-up to Ecuador’s senior squad and made a notable international debut in a goalless draw against Iraq. He solidified his position by earning a third and final cap as a second-half substitute in Ecuador’s commanding 3-1 victory over Bolivia

'The Ecuadorian Football Federation expresses its deepest regret for the death of Marco Angulo former La Tri player, who with his talent and dedication defended the colours of our country at every opportunity he had,' an Ecuadorian Football Federation statement read.
