Henderson denied Manchester City any silverware this season

Crystal Palace got off to a flying start at Wembley as they took the lead in the 15th minute. Eberechi Eze scored the opener off a quick, slick counter-attack that left Manchester City's defence in all sorts of bother. Minutes after Eze scored the opener, Manchester City launched a flurry of attacks. In the 24th minute, Manchester City received a great goal-scoring opportunity. However, Crystal Palace's goalkeeper, Henderson had different ideas.

In the 24th minute, Henderson stopped the ball outside his penalty area with his hands, deflecting it away from Erling Haaland as the Manchester City forward attempted to reach a pass. Referee Stuart Attwell and his assistant referees seemingly believed the incident occurred within the penalty area, allowing the play to continue. When the game was finally paused, the ball went out of play, a VAR check was implemented concerning a potential red card for Henderson as he denied a clear goalscoring opportunity.

The VAR referee, however, adjusted that Henderson wouldn't receive a red card as the ball was moving away from the goal post. Hence, Dean Henderson was allowed to continue playing for the rest of the match. The decision proved to be the turning point as the goalkeeper went to make numerous saves, including a penalty against Maramoush.

"Don’t ask me, ask the VAR and the referee" Guardiola said on being asked about Henderson. “I lost my dad at the start of the season. And I'll miss him here today, but he was with me every kick of the ball. I dedicate that win to him,” Dean Henderson said after the match.
