Cole Palmer lashes out at social media critics
Cole Palmer's 18-game goal drought finally came to an end in the match against the new Premier League Champions, Liverpool. The English star found the net from the spot in the 90+6th minute. Earlier, Chelsea's Enzo Fernandez scored a goal in the third minute. Liverpool also conceded their own goal in the 56th minute. Virgil Van Dijk was the sole scorer for the Reds in this fixture.
Since joining Chelsea in 2023, Palmer has become a fan favourite as he notched up 36 goals and 17 assists in his first 54 matches. However, he endured a long spell of goalless fixtures this season, leading to him being criticised on social media. After netting his first in a long time, Palmer wasted no time in calling out his critics.
"We played very well as a team. They're champions for a reason, but we showed desire. I just felt normal. Sh*t happens... sorry for my language. Obviously, it happens, I went three months without scoring, but it just gives me more fight and motivation to do more for myself and for the team." Palmer said.
"Social media nowadays is full of idiots. I don't pay any attention to that. I've scored today and I'm happy, but it's only one and I've got to keep improving and try and reach new levels. Getting chances and not scoring, it feels like you're letting your team down. I feel like I am mentally strong anyway. I feel pride in helping the team, and if I'm not doing that, I'm not happy." Palmer added.
The victory propelled Chelsea's chances of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League next season. The Blues currently sit in the fifth spot with 63 points in 35 matches.
