The history of bitter rivalry

Barcelona and Real Madrid have been battling each other over the centuries. Ironically, the rivalry stems from off-field circumstances. Barcelona and Real Madrid are two of the largest Spanish cities. In addition, both these cities idolise very different forms of nationalism, which happen to be polar opposites.

The rivalry was also fuelled after former Portuguese footballer Luis Figo betrayed the Catalans and joined Real Madrid in the summer of 2000. In one of the most iconic moments, when Luis Figo returned to Camp Nou after joining the Galacticos, he was greeted with a real pig's head while taking a corner kick.
