AS Roma defender Mats Hummels apologises to fans on X for his horrendous foul

Serie A football club, AS Roma's dependable defender, Mats Hummels, apologised to the club fans on his X after a horrendous tackle that resulted in a red card.

Mats Hummels apology

German defender Mats Hummels took responsibility for putting an end to Roma's hopes of winning the UEFA Europa League following his red card against Athletic Bilbao on Thursday. The former Borussia Dortmund centre-back received his marching orders for a horrendous foul on Maroan Sannadi just 11 minutes into the match at San Mames.

Nico Williams netted two goals, while Yuri Berchiche added another, leading to a 3-1 defeat for Roma. Leandro Paredes converted an extra-time penalty, which served as a consolation. As a result, Roma crashed out of the Europa League with a 4-3 aggregate scoreline.

Mats Hummels sorrowful apology to the fans 

The defender was quick to express his guilt on social media to the fans. He apologised to both the club and his fans for his poor performance, which negatively impacted the fortunes of his side.

The German centre-back acknowledged his fault and described his mistake as 'simply stupid and horrendous'. He expressed his sadness for not being a reliable asset to the team when it needed him the most. He deeply regretted his actions, which catalysed the elimination of his team from the UEFA Europa League.

"I am sorry, I want to apologize to our fans and my teammates. I let everyone down today with a mistake that was simply stupid and horrendous. These games used to be the games my team could rely on me, now i fu**** up and cost the whole club the dream of winning the Europa League. Don‘t know what else to say, I am as disappointed in me like all of you." Mats wrote on X.

Mats Hummels joined AS Roma in 2024 from Borussia Dortmund. Since arriving, he has made 11 appearances for the club across club competitions. He has also represented Germany in 78 matches from 2010 to 2023. He has also netted five goals for his national side.
