Today, Arsenal played Newcastle United in the English Premier League in the hopes of defeating Eddie Howe's team at St. James' Park. After defeating Championship team Preston during their midweek Carabao Cup fourth-round match, the Gunners were feeling upbeat. However, after retaliating against Chelsea in the League Cup on Wednesday, the Magpies were feeling quite confident.
Alexander Isak's 12th strike in as many home games puts Newcastle ahead of Arsenal at St. James' Park. After just twelve minutes, the Magpies opened the tie when Anthony Gordon found Isak open inside the penalty box with a precise cross from the right. David Raya, the goalkeeper for the Gunners, was struck by the striker's clinical header.
Declan Rice's corner kick found former Tottenham star Mikel Merino, whose shot was stopped by Lewis Hall near the goal line, giving the North Londoners a chance to tie the score. To secure all three points away from home, they needed to perform better in the second half.
In the first half, Arsenal controlled 58% of the ball. Just a single of the six shots fired by the Gunner found its target. Conversely, Newcastle had four shots, but only one of them, the crucial goal from Alexander Isak, went towards goal.
Arsenal succumb to third loss of the new season
Arsenal could not do much in the second half against a strong Newcastle United defence, who played with everything on the line and deserved to take all three points. Even the substitutions that Mikel Arteta made in the second half were not able to provide any sort of spark for the visitors.
Last year as well, Newcastle United were able to win the game 1-0 and they managed to do so once again this time around. This has been a poor start to the season for Arsenal and Mikel Arteta as they have now lost 15 points already this season in just 11 games of the new Premier League season.
