Andres Iniesta said on Monday that he has made the decision to leave the professional football league permanently. With 29 of his 35 championships coming from his time as an FC Barcelona player, the 40-year-old wraps up his career.

After giving a speech during a press conference a day later, Iniesta had time to consider his career in the media. According to Diario AS, he additionally utilized the occasion to thank his family for their unwavering support. He said, “I would like to remember all the people who have seen me on the street or on the football field and have shown me their respect and love. That’s what I take with me. Footballers pass, people stay.”

Iniesta said, “There is another person who does not like me to talk about her. It’s my mother. Maybe you haven’t heard as much as other people. I would like to thank her for the mother she has been and the mother she is, for everything. I wanted to do it at this moment, you know it all too well, but I wanted to share it at this special and beautiful moment. All the sacrifice and effort for me and my sister, I will always thank you.
