After moving to Southampton, Aaron Ramsdale claims he still communicates with Mikel Arteta and has no animosity against the Arsenal boss. After David Raya took his spot in the Premier League the previous season, the 26-year-old custodian made just six appearances. During the summer transfer window, he made the decision to leave Arsenal in pursuit of consistent playing time.
Ramsdale and newly promoted Southampton reached an agreement on a four-year contract worth an initial £18 million. Prior to the international break, the custodian made his debut in the team's 3-1 loss to Brentford on the road. This weekend at St Mary's, when the Saints visit Erik ten Hag's struggling Manchester United club, he is anticipated to continue playing for the team.
An understandable amount of resentment towards the head coach of Arsenal may be felt by the England international, considering how brutally Arteta benched Ramsdale in preference for Raya. However, Ramsdale stated in an interview with talkSPORT that he and the manager are still on a positive note, with the Spaniard praising him for helping Arsenal re-enter the UEFA Champions League.
He said, “I only spoke to him last week. What he did for me in my time at Arsenal I can only thank him for. And he thanked me for my contribution, not just myself but as a football club, getting back into the Champions League, pushing for a trophy.”
“I tried my best to change Arteta's mind” : Aaron Ramsdale
The former Arsenal goalkeeper added that, “Ultimately, as manager’s do and top manager’s do, they have to make decisions which will upset people. He made that decision and we still speak. I’m obviously looking forward to getting some games under my belt here and we have Arsenal in a few weeks which will be a nice return.”
The England shotstopper added, “A manager's decision is a manager's decision. I tried my best to change Arteta's mind and force my way back in. His mind was set… and David Raya had a great season. It was tough but now I found a new home”
