Although it's an exciting and compelling game, football carries some risks. Players throw their bodies along the ground in an attempt to protect their box or score goals, and occasionally they are injured as a consequence. A catastrophic injury has the potential to seriously harm a person's career, regardless of whether they are elite athletes or young, rising stars.

Here are the 5 Shocking Football injuries that stunned the world

5. Alfie Haaland

Alf-Inge Haaland, the dad of Manchester City player Erling, suffered a knee injury following a careless challenge by Roy Keane that eventually forced him to retire. His hatred for the Norwegian stemmed from the tackle, which became well-known and provoked controversy, in 1997 when Haaland stepped over Keane after he went down after a collision and charged him with injuring himself.

4. Neymar

After being challenged by Juan Camilo Zúñiga of Colombia at the 2014 World Cup, Neymar fractured his vertebrae. Because the tournament was being held in his own country, everyone was talking about the Brazilian sensation going into it. The waves of yellow and the loud commotion he made when he took the stage was incredible. Rather, the injury would force him out of the competition, and he would have to watch later on as Germany stunned Brazil 7-1 during the semi-finals, bringing the country to its knees.

3. Luke Shaw

During his initial years with the Saints, the left-back displayed tremendous promise, and it was believed that the Red Devils were making the right decision by signing him before any possible rivals. Shaw's development at Old Trafford was severely hampered by the double leg fracture he would unfortunately get during a UEFA Champions League encounter against PSV in 2015. Shaw made his comeback to the pitch after a protracted 11-month recuperation, gradually rediscovering his form and solidifying his place in United's defence.

2. Marcin Wasilewski

When Standard Liege played Anderlecht during the Belgian Pro League in 2009, Marcin Wasilewski was left with a broken ankle and leg as a result of an awful tackle by Axel Witsel. After an appeal, the Belgian FA punished Witsel for eight games due to the incident, and the defender would require reconstructive surgery for open breaks to both the tibia as well as the fibula. Wasilewski made an outstanding recovery following extensive treatment and rehabilitation. He went on to play for Leicester City and won a Premier League trophy under Claudio Ranieri.

1. Roberto Baggio

One of the greatest Italian footballers of the latter part of the twentieth century, Roberto Baggio played for the Azzurri for an incredible 16 years, from 1988 to 2004. However, Baggio's most catastrophic injury occurred near the end of his playing career when he ripped his ACL in 2002, missing several months of action as a result. Baggio overcame the setback to resume playing, and with Brescia, he may have played some of his best football ever, amassing back-to-back Serie A seasons with double-digit goals.
