A football player's life is usually not very long on the ground. They typically only play on the field for 20 years at most, with 35 being the customary retirement age. It is scarcely a surprise that the door to retirement finally props open given the enormous expectations and growing fixture list. 

After spending their whole lives pushing themselves to the maximum on the field, some people look forward to putting up their boots. In August, there are big names who have taken international retirement but will play at the club level. Hence, we take a look at five footballers who have taken international retirement in August 2024.

1. Manuel Neuer (Germany):

Germany's legendary goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has taken retirement from international football. Manuel Neuer ended his 15-year career with Germany. For over a decade, he was a first-choice goalkeeper for Germany and has played 124 games for the national team. During the FIFA World Cup 2014, Manuel Neuer played an important role as Germany won the World Cup and Manuel Neuer won the Golden Glove Award. 

2. Ilkay Gundogan (Germany):

German captain Ilkay Gundogan has retired from international football at the age of 32. During the Euro 2024 Ilkay Gundogan led the team to quarterfinals but lost to Spain. After a few weeks Ilkay Gundogan posted his retirement news on social media. Ilay Gundogan played 82 games for Germany and scored 19 goals. 

3. Yann Sommer (Switzerland):

After representing Switzerland for 12 years Yann Sommer has taken retirement from international football. Since making his debut in 2012 Yann Sommer earned 94 caps for his national team. During the Euro 2024, he helped Switzerland to reach the quarterfinals but lost to England in a penalty shootout. Yann Sommer's skills were seen in FIFA World Cup 2018 and 2020 as well.

4. Daley Blind (Netherlands):

At the age of 34 Daley Blind retired from international football. Daley Blind made his debut for the Netherlands in 2013 and has played over 108 games for the national team. The Euro 2024 was his last tournament with the Netherlands and in the game against Romania, he was a substitute. Daley Blind is the fifth most-capped player for the Netherlands.

5. Pepe (Portugal):

Portugal defender Pepe has announced his international retirement at the age of 41 after the Euro 2024. Pepe’s last appearance with Portugal was against France in the quarter-finals and he became the oldest player to play in the European quarter-finals. Pepe was part of Portugal which won the Euro 2016 trophy. While Pepe played for Portugal in 141 matches.
