In a significant moment for international football, Manuel Neuer, one of the sport's most celebrated goalkeepers, has announced his retirement from the German national team. This marks the end of an illustrious 15-year career with Die Mannschaft, during which Neuer earned 124 caps and became a defining figure in Germany's football history.

Neuer’s journey with the national team has been nothing short of extraordinary. He made his debut in 2009 during a friendly match against the United Arab Emirates. He quickly rose to prominence as Germany’s first-choice goalkeeper in the 2010 FIFA World Cup. His stellar performances in that tournament, where he conceded only three goals in six matches, established him as a key player for Germany.

The pinnacle of Neuer's international career came in 2014 when he played a crucial role in Germany's World Cup victory in Brazil. His exceptional goalkeeping throughout the tournament earned him the prestigious Golden Glove award, and his ability to contribute to both defence and attack solidified his reputation as one of the world's best goalkeepers. That same year, his performance earned him a nomination for the Ballon d'Or, further cementing his legacy.

“This decision wasn’t easy”, says Manuel Neuer

Beyond the World Cup, Neuer was also instrumental in Germany's success in the European Championships. In the 2016 Euros, his heroic saves in a penalty shootout against Italy were pivotal in helping Germany reach the semifinals.

In a heartfelt message shared on Instagram, the 38-year-old expressed the difficulty of his decision to retire, stating, "The day had to come at some point. Today, my career with the German national team ends. Everyone who knows me knows that this decision wasn’t easy for me."

Reflecting on his time with the national team, Neuer highlighted the 2014 World Cup win and the atmosphere during the 2024 European Championships as moments of pride and gratitude. Neuer’s final appearance for Germany came during the home European Championships, where the team was eliminated in the quarterfinals by eventual champions Spain.
