The Anti-Defamation League, on November 15 published a report claiming Steam, a popular video game distribution platform, is filled with extremism & antisemitism. The ADL report also found over 1.8 million pieces of extremist or hateful content, including antisemitic symbols and copypasta. Acting on the report, US Senator Mark Warner has written to Gabe Newell, Valve’s boss.
As per the letter revealed by the Verge, the Senator raises a similar concern regarding the extremist content on Steam. Warner mentioned a similar concern raised back in 2022 and the company has still allowed these kinds of content across the platform with a lax moderation.
“My concern is elevated by the fact that Steam is the largest single online gaming digital distribution and social networking platform in the world, with over 100 million unique user accounts and a user base similar in scale to that of the 'traditional' social media and social network platforms,” Warner wrote.
He also mentioned the ADL report citing almost a million users with extremist or antisemitic profile pictures and thousands of groups also posting similar content. These posts are usually made using memes, with Pepe being the most popular while the swastika symbol is the second most popular.

Warner asks for a quick response on Valve’s stance
With the ADL making some huge allegations, Warner questioned Valve and its intentions on putting a proper implementation of their policies in order to provide a safe social environment for those visiting the platform.
“Valve must bring its content moderation practices in line with industry standards or face more intense scrutiny from the federal government for its complicity in allowing hate groups to congregate and engage in activities that undoubtedly puts Americans at risk,” he further added.
Following that, the Senator listed a set of questions regarding the same topic while asking for a response before December 13, 2024. He also asks for a straight response rather than an attempt to answer the questions.
