Unity game engine faces another round of layoffs early in 2025 Photograph: (AI)
Game Engine developer Unity just faced a new round of layoffs, which seemingly impacted several employees. This comes amidst the company’s ongoing struggles that previously resulted in Unity parting ways with around 25% of its global workforce impacting around 1,800 employees last year.
In an internal mail revealed by 80lvl, Unity CEO Matthew Bromberg broke the news, saying, “We are making some important organisational changes today within the CTO, Engine Product, and Ads teams. These changes are a response to choices we’re making about what direction Unity will take in the future, and some of our colleagues’ jobs will be impacted.”
Bromberg also claimed that product and engineering teams were stretched across ‘too many products’. Apart from the layoffs, multiple teams that still retain their jobs are also being merged across other teams, meaning there is also some form of restructuring across the company.
Unity losing the trust of game developers
Since the controversial policy change in 2023 of charging a ‘runtime fee’ from developers, Unity has faced a huge impact on its reputation. The decision was reversed; however, the damage has been done with Studious and game developers abandoning the game engine in droves. CEO at the time, John Riccitiello, stepped down following this drama.
At the moment, it is unknown how many employees have been affected. However, with an increasing number of posts across social media and the entire team behind Unity Behaviour being canned, it feels like a decent number of employees were let go.

What was the reason behind Unity layoffs?
The company aims to be more effective at the work they do and Bromberg believes that people added to speed things up ultimately resulted in slowing things down. The company also plans to invest in the industry and possibly revive the idea of implementing artificial intelligence (AI). Another reason is to sustain the company and profits, which, as we know, results in multiple rounds of layoffs.
