Shadow of the Erdtree/Silent Hill 2 Remake
The Game Awards 2024 is set to take place in December, with the nominees for each voting category to be revealed soon. Ahead of that, a new announcement has revealed that starting this year, DLC, remakes and remasters of/for games will also be eligible for the Game of the Year award and the reception has been mixed.
“The Game Awards aims to recognize the best creative and technical work each year, irrespective of the format of that content’s release. Expansion packs, new game seasons, DLCs, remakes, and remasters are eligible in all categories, if the jury deems the new creative and technical work to be worthy of a nomination,” the updated FAQ for the Game Awards reveal.
This was quite a surprising announcement as usually DLCs are a much smaller aspect of the game, while remasters and remasters are basically the same game with the quality of life and other improvements. Many believe that this should not be a thing, but some argue that many DLCs are much larger in scope and should be considered.
Shadow of the Erdtree for Elden Ring and Phantom Liberty for Cyberpunk 2077 are a great example of incredible DLC expansions. These contain story and gameplay longer than many modern-day games while also being a great experience overall.

Gamers do not like the idea of DLC, remakes and remasters as GOTY
The whole point behind Game of the Year award is to celebrate the newly released game that Gaming the most loves from the gaming community. While many DLCs and remakes do have a significant amount of effort put into them, it shouldn’t be bundled with the full game release.
Perhaps a better in a separate category for DLC and remakes, but then again a few will always sweep the board, as many people fear Shadow of the Erdtree will do the same with the Game Awards this year. Here’s what the gamers had to say.
Terrible. Not surprising, but terrible. DLC should be it's own award. Remakes/Remasters it's own. Including them for all categories is an insult to basically any fully new game. All this, for Elden Ring to have two GOTY's to it's name.

This is pretty much an excuse for Elden Ring lmao

That's stupid as hell, there should be a category for dlcs and expansions. This just means that they're nominating Elden Ring again for GOTY because of the DLC.

I don’t think I agree with this at all… DLC and expansions should not be considered for “GAME OF THE YEAR” or other categories where full games (newly released) are in there. Not a fan of this TBH.
