Rocksteady cannot catch a break as the studio behind Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League suffered another wave of lay-offs. This occurred right before 2024 concluded making it one of the most difficult years for the studio. Before that, the first round of lay-offs occurred just a few months earlier in September 2024.

All this started after an abysmal launch for Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League which fans had very high hopes of considering the studio also made Batman: Arkham series. The confirmation came from several employees talking to Eurogamer who reported that many divisions were hit including programming and artist teams, as well as more QA staff.

Not only the launch but further updates down the road for the game also faced similar criticism. Eventually, the studio announced one last update before. The main culprit apart from a mediocre story and gameplay was live service elements which weren’t needed.

Adding live service also led to players getting randomly disconnected and unable to play without the internet. This added to the frustration as players were stuck going back and forth in the game and losing precious refund window.

Troubles continue for the AAA gaming industry

These lay-offs are just a small metric adding to several similar lay-offs after the games did not meet the sales and profit targets. Many other studios also found themselves in a similar situation and it’s funny to see the developers suffer for decisions made by management.

At the moment, it is unknown what will happen past the final update. Will the server shut down and WB will erase the existence of the game similar to Concord, or will players get an offline patch like Redfall? While there were many successful AAA game releases in 2024, indie games did much better than anyone else.
