Square Enix reports Life is Strange: Double Exposure as a loss in its financial results

Life is Strange: Double Exposure was a massive loss for Square Enix. The latest entry in the franchise saw the lowest rating from fans who cited several complaints mostly regarding the narrative. It was clear that the game didn’t do well following launch but the latest financial report indirectly confirmed that the game resulted in a loss for the company.

“The HD (High-Definition) Game sub-segments net sales for the nine-month period ended December 31, 2024, declined compared with the same period of the previous fiscal year as new titles generated lower sales than releases such as ‘Final Fantasy XVI,’ ‘Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster,’ and ‘Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince’ had the previous year,” the report said.

Fans call out a weak story for Life is Strange: Double Exposure

Life is Strange: Double Exposure brought back the protagonist from the first game and fans were quite excited to see Max Caulfield in a new supernatural story. Sadly, a majority of the fans were heavily disappointed with the story and gameplay.

Players were upset about how Max’s relationship led to nothing and asked the point of being there. There was also some controversy regarding changes made to the story multiple times through development ahead of release resulting in what fans called ‘boring’ for most past only focusing on the supernatural aspect.

A new Life is Strange game may not happen anytime soon

Following the release and reception of the game, there were reports of layoffs at Deck Nine Games, the development studio behind Life is Strange: Double Exposure. Layoffs nowadays are a general indication of a game underperforming as per the company wanted/expected if it happens after release.

Following that, Square Enix made an effort to find out what went wrong so maybe they could improve upon the next instalment, however, the most recent report suggests something else. There’s always a chance for a new ‘Life is Strange’ game but it could be a long time before fans see one.
