Monster Hunter Wilds has been skyrocketing in the Steam best-seller charts, however, an indie title is also creeping up the ranks. REPO (Retrieve, Extract, and Profit Operation), a physics-based co-op horror game is quickly becoming popular among gamers and has reached over 50,000 concurrent users within a week of release.

While it may look nothing compared to some of the top games, the game has crossed the average player count of some of the biggest IPs. For comparison, Balatro, which was a competitor for the 2024 Game of the Year only reached a peak player count of 43,000. Same with NBA 2K25 which capped at a max player count of 44,000.

Why is REPO so popular on Steam?

Like many other games on Steam that rip off games that became popular before them, many will instantly recognize the gameplay loop of REPO which is similar to Lethal Company. However, it expands upon the idea by giving players a physics-based grabbing tool which adds the fun part to the game.

Players can grab stuff with the tool and even use it as a weapon against smaller monsters. Lethal Company most game players to run, but in REPO players can hide and work together, or even grieve fellow players in different ways, adding more depth to the gameplay, not to mention fun which is huge for a game that only costs $8 or Rs 384.

Is REPO worth buying?

Since the last few years, Indie games have taken over Steam with several new releases lined up each month. Most of the games are simply a copy of other popular games released in the past, and the same is true for REPO. However, the game is absolutely worth checking out for the price if people have friends to play with.

REPO does not seem to be a game that will sustain hundreds or thousands of players for years, however, for its price, the amount of fun players can have is worth it. For comparison, AAA games can cost anywhere between $50-$70 for 20 hours of story. The same amount of fun with friends isn’t a bad deal for a fraction of the price.
