There is a very good chance that if someone likes video games, they also like reading manga. Starting March 13, Nintendo Switch users will be able to do so. A new app from Japanese publisher ‘Shogakukan’ launching next month is designed just to do that and will allow users to also read manga on their Switch devices.

Advertisment

The announcement comes from an editor for Shogakukan's monthly Coro Coro Comic magazine ‘Tatsuki Waki’ on X (Twitter). Manga Watch further reported that ‘The Rewinder of Fate’, the cover image displayed on Switch, is one of the comics that will be available on launch.

This app will work in portrait mode, like mobile devices and users can navigate using the joysticks and buttons to navigate and perform other actions. The joystick will be used to turn pages, X to zoom in, Y to zoom out, B to exit, and A to turn off information, although touch support may also be present.

Manga apps for Nintendo Switch will be limited

While a manga-reading app sounds incredible, many of the Switch users will be bummed out after finding that the app will only be available in Japan on release. There is no official announcement that the app will be exclusive so a global release may be possible in the future.

As for offerings, the app is reported to feature a mix of free and premium manga. This can either be paid per manga or a monthly subscription to access all premium offerings. Either way, the app might save a bit of time. All Nintendo Switch now needs is a cellular connection and it will replace mobile phones for all gamers.

Will the manga app work on Switch 2?

Nintendo has already announced backward compatibility and with the release just a few months away, there is a good reason to believe that the app will also be supported across Nintendo Switch 2. If not, it may be a huge missed opportunity, as the device is expected to break all records on launch.
