The recently released video game-based movie Minecraft is doing well at the box office. It earned a massive $ 550 million world wide just two weeks after its release. Every year, many movies are released based on video games. Some of the best critically acclaimed movies are Mario Bros, Sonic, Resident Evil, and Mortal Kombat. There are also many web series made out of these video games like Fallout and Halo, which were well received by the fans.
But Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer says, “The video games business is successful by itself. It doesn't need this outlet.” He added, “Let’s never turn this into something where it has to get done, every franchise has to have a game or a movie or a TV show, and it becomes more like licensing.” Following Minecraft’s huge success, there is a sequel to be made for that movie. Even Netflix is planning for a web series based on the game.

More movies to come
Microsoft-owned video games like Fallout and Halo are given a second season after their success in web series. The Fallout was the one that no one expected to be critically acclaimed by the fans. Spencer feels that not every video game needs to be made into a movie and build a separate franchise. Games will sell themselves, and many have become cult and iconic over the years, like God of War, Assasins Creed and Tomb Raider. Spencer also said he learned many new things after doing Halo and Fallout as a complete web series.
He said, “We learned from doing Halo, we learn from doing fallout. All of these build on themselves, and we’ll have, obviously, a couple that miss; it's just kind of part of it. But I think what I’d say to the community that likes this work is, you're going to see more adaptations because we're gaining confidence, and we’re learning through this.”
The traditional media like television and movie production houses are showing more interest in video game-based movies, and Microsoft sees that as a healthy trend. But for creation, it needs more time, and they are now in the process.
