Popular streaming platform Amazon Prime has now announced that they are going to shelve the Tomb Raider web series after wasting millions of dollars on development costs. In 2024, Amazon announced they are developing a new web series based on Lara Croft’s treasure-hunting adventures.

The biggest hype of the announcement was choosing Phoebe Waller Bridge as writer and producer. She is the creator of Fleabag and the head writer of Killing Eve. During that time of announcement, she said, “Lara means a lot to me, as she does to many, and I can’t wait to go on this adventure.”

Is Amazon's Tomb Raider dead?

But many rumours are saying that the project of bringing Lara Croft into the TV screens is dead, and many believe Amazon has shelved the plans for the web series. But we still haven't heard anything from Amazon Prime or Waller Brige regarding the Tomb Raider web series.

Amazon signed Waller Bridge for a mega salary of $ 20 million/year in 2019. But they haven't produced any movie or web series after signing her. Jennifer Salke, who signed Waller, said, “Bridge grew up playing Lara Croft/Tomb Raider.” But still, we haven't received confirmation from Amazon Prime regarding the cancellation. A new Tomb Raider game is now under development on Unreal Engine 5, which is expected to have more mind games and puzzles. One day, we expect a full-fledged web series based on Lara Croft and her adventures on the big screen.

Lara Croft is the first female lead in the gaming world. She is the biggest and most recognisable female protagonist in the world. Over the years, the franchise has been developed into one of the best arcade adventure games. Even the Uncharted franchise was inspired by Lara Croft as it includes the same elements like Treasure hunting and puzzle solving. Many call Nathan Drake (Uncharted) the male version of Lara Croft. Both Lara and Nathan have similarities in character development.
