Streaming on Twitch has become an incredible marketing tool for game producers. In essence, it's word-of-mouth on a much larger scale; with just one well-known streamer picking up a game, it may lead to a huge spike in sales. Internal records were set by its viewing and interaction numbers, which also put the platform ahead of all of its rivals in the gaming content market put together.

The global expansion of VTubers and the revival of Grand Theft Auto V were the main factors in its success.  Unsurprisingly, Grand Theft Auto V is at the top of the list of the most-played games on Twitch in 2024. With over 1.4 billion hours of combined viewing, the game continues to be popular among streamers and their followers, easily surpassing League of Legends in second place.

GTA 6 set to release this year

With a total of 1.19 billion hours, the MOBA was the only other game to achieve billions of hours of viewing. Last year, 15.6 billion hours of gaming were streamed by Twitch users. This indicates that, for a game that is almost ten years old, Grand Theft Auto 5 accounted for about 9% of Twitch's gaming audience. This is mainly due to two factors: GTA Online has a lot of followers and popularity GTA 6 will be releasing soon.

The first trailer of GTA 6 came in December 2023, since fans around the globe are waiting for the game to launch. The enthusiasm hasn't diminished despite almost a year of silence, as fans impatiently anticipate the next teaser. GTA 6 is still scheduled to release later this year, despite rumours of a postponement. We know it will be available on the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, but no exact release date has been disclosed as of yet.
