Gearbox flying a terminally ill Borderlands fan to showcase Borderlands 4 early

The CEO of Gearbox recently reached out to a stage 4 cancer patient, Caleb McAlpine, to help him see Borderlands 4 ahead of its 2025 release.

A 37-year-old, Borderlands video game series fan, Caleb McAlpine, diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer, recently revealed his circumstance and asked for help reaching out to Gearbox to see Borderlands 4 early. His wish is now granted after the CEO of Gearbox, Randy Pitchford, reached out to him in order to make his dream come true.

Randy in a recent tweet revealed that he and Caleb were in contact via email. “Caleb and I are now chatting via e-mail, and we’re going to do whatever we can to make something happen,” he wrote. It is also impressive to note that the response was

Borderlands 4 was recently revealed during Gamescom 2024 and is the next mainline entry into the franchise. The game is set to release sometime in 2025, however, there is no release window. It can be well into the fourth quarter or can even be delayed.

Caleb, who was diagnosed with terminal cancer, was given a maximum of 12 months time, 24 if the chemo worked. Since he wasn’t sure if he was going to make it till the release, he requested early access, despite knowing it might not be granted.

Fell in love with Borderlands since first game

In an interview with GamesRadar, Caleb revealed, “I looked them up and saw the stories, and it touched my heart, even more, knowing that Gearbox is such a great company to do this when they didn’t have to at all,” he wrote.

“When I received an email from Randy, I couldn’t believe it. It was awesome to see the CEO of Gearbox emailing me and telling me that he would do whatever he could to help me out. I was just floored, to be honest. In a good way. I never expected anything like this. It almost felt like a dream, to be honest,” he further added.

Caleb further revealed his passion for gaming a how important Borderlands was to him and about the times they had LAN parties in the co-op mode and have been playing the games since.
