GameStop looking to sell French and Canadian operations

One of the largest video game retailers in the United States, GameStop is planning to sell its operation across France and Canada. This comes in an official statement where the company did not explain much on why it is planning to do so, although this isn’t the first time something like this happened in recent months.

Advertisment

“GameStop Corp. (NYSE: GME) (“GameStop” or the “Company”) today announced that as part of its evaluation of its international assets, the Company intends to pursue a sale of its operations in France and Canada," the official statement said.

Over the last few months, GameStop has shut down several stores around the world. People have complained that the ones that are open usually do not have much stock of physical video games, instead, these stores are filled with collectibles.

Digital games breaking the bank for GameStop

Despite being the largest video game retailer the company isn’t doing well largely due to the increase in popularity of digital games. These are some of the publicly announced closures as France and Canada have over 500 stores combined. A few stores are often closed every once in a while without an announcement.

Multiple reports suggest a heavy decline in physical game sales with the US alone witnessing another downward trend as per Mat Piscatella from Circana. Due to this, physical stores have taken a heavy hit in sales leading them to stock up on something else that gamers might buy.

One less place for French and Canadians to buy physical games

Despite the decline, there are still people who love to own their games physically, which many won’t be able to do through GameStop across France and Canada. The shutdown isn’t finalized yet as the company is still looking for a buyer. The only hally ending here will be the situation where they find a buyer who also aims to open a physical game retail store.
