One of the longest-running video game magazines, Game Informer, has now ceased all operations. While the official statement came later night on August 2, fans visiting the website prior were greeted with the closure notice.

Advertisment

“After 33 thrilling years of bringing you the latest news, reviews, and insights from the ever-evolving world of gaming, it is with a heavy heart that we announce the closure of Game Informer,” the statement read. They further expressed their gratitude toward the gaming community for being there all this time.

Funny enough, the statement was not written by anyone from the staff as per Kotaku. The entire staff was informed about the closure at the last moment. The news came as a shock for the entire gaming industry as the entire operations were shuttered by its parent company GameStop.

Former Game Informer magazine content director, Kyle Hilliard also revealed that the next issue was almost complete. However, due to this abrupt closure, issue #367 will be the final magazine by Game Informer.

“Game Informer has been closed down by GameStop and the entire, incredibly talented staff (including myself) have all been laid off. A frustrating turn of events (especially considering we were about 70% done with the next issue, and it was going to have a GREAT cover),” he wrote.

No statement from GameStop

Founded back in 1991, Game Informer was the largest video game magazine publisher that went through an era of evolving video game industry across three decades and was one of the most respected outlets across the globe.

They were acquired by GameStop back in 2000 and things were going well for some time. GameStop themselves have yet to put out a statement regarding the closure of Game Informer, although the reasons for this are quite clear. The company, which was once one of the most popular physical video game copies and magazines, have largely deviated from previous offerings.
