Electronic Arts (EA) has announced the impending closure of 10 of its games in 2025, marking another chapter in its ongoing cycle of discontinuing older titles. The latest casualty, EA Sports UFC 3, is scheduled to be shut down on February 17, 2025, ending its seven-year run since its release in 2018 on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. This news might dishearten fans, it aligns with EA’s pattern of phasing out games to focus on newer releases.
The year 2025 will see a significant number of shutdowns, beginning with the Rory McIlroy PGA Tour on January 16 and followed by The Simpsons: Tapped Out on January 24. The month will culminate with the mass deactivation of seven mobile games on January 29, including titles like Blood & Glory: Immortals, Deer Hunter Classic, and Frontline Commando: D-Day.
With EA Sports UFC 3 joining the list in February, the total count of games that are facing closure next year stands at 10. The decision to discontinue EA Sports UFC 3 comes despite its initial popularity and positive reviews at launch. The game, developed by EA Canada, drew acclaim for its immersive gameplay but faced criticism for its reliance on microtransactions.
The shutdown will render all online features of the game non-operational, though fans can still access it in offline modes. For players seeking a modern alternative, EA has reassured that newer UFC titles, such as UFC 4 (2020) and UFC 5 (2023), remain fully functional with continued updates.
The longevity of EA games is under criticism!
This isn’t the first time EA has made waves with such announcements. In 2024, the company retired from a variety of games, signalling a strategic focus on streamlining its catalogue. However, this trend has raised questions about the longevity of games heavily reliant on online functionality. Gamers are increasingly reminded to consider the limited shelf life of such titles when making purchases.
For those hesitant about outright buying EA games, services like EA Play and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate provide an alternative. These subscriptions offer access to new EA releases within six months of launch, allowing fans to enjoy titles without the commitment of a full purchase. While this model doesn’t address the emotional sting of losing beloved games, it softens the financial blow.
