Discord has now released an SDK allowing development studios to integrate its social features directly inside games. This, as per the company, will allow developers to integrate Discord’s messaging feature in their games for better cross-platform communication even when they do not have the application installed on their systems or a Discord account.

Having an account will open up other features for a person, like their Discord friends list and direct game invites. Features like text and voice chat (currently in beta) lobbies with friends, and the ability to send friend requests and directly invite friends to an in-game lobby will also be possible, as per the blog post.

Get ready to see Discord inside games

Discord is quite popular when it comes to communication while playing with friends. Chances are, if a person befriends another during an online game, they are more likely to communicate over Discord for future games, as it also acts as a good way to sit and talk even when not playing.

With SDK, developers will be integrating features inside the game; the upside is that more time can be spent on the game rather than creating a way for others to communicate. The downside as of now seems like a similar communication UI across all games unless it's customisable by the developers.

Speaking of Discord integration, this feature is reportedly rolling out for games by early partners, which include some big names like Tencent Games, Facepunch Studios, 1047 Games, Scopely, Mainframe Industries, Elodie Games, Theorycraft Games, and others.

Discord SDK is available free of charge to developers

Another interesting thing to note here is that this feature is available free of charge. There’s a chance that the TOS will likely have something about data collection but most people won’t care as long as they are already using Discord while playing multiplayer games with friends. Developers can request expanded access to features that are currently in the closed beta.
