Cyberpunk 2077’s sequel will have a big name as CD Projekt shares big updates

Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt has given a big update regarding the game's sequel that is now under pre-production. The game developer shares regular updates to its shareholders, and they even send reports to stakeholders who were unable to attend the meetings.  

Recently, the studio has given a presentation regarding their commercial performance in the first quarter of 2025. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt had 60 million copies sold in this period. It also included Cyberpunk 2077’s unnamed sequel, which is potentially Cyberpunk 2. Major resources are allotted to The Witcher 4, which is their next biggest release, and is now in full production. Cyberpunk 2 is called as ‘Project Orion’, and it is being developed at CD Projekt’s Boston studio.

There is also additional support from Vancouver and Warsaw, and the game is directed by Pawel Sasko, who was also the quest director on Cyberpunk 2077 before he got promoted as game director. Last year, the Witcher 4 trailer was released during the Game Awards. 

When will Cyberpunk 2 release?

If the game development is still far away, we may not see Cyberpunk 2 before 2030. There are 96 members working in the pre-development, and as months go on, more developers could be added. CD Projekt has a total of 730 game developers, and most of them are currently working on The Witcher 4. The original Cyberpunk 2077 was released in 2020 and has sold 30 million copies so far. 

They said, “Several weeks ago, the CD Projekt Red team responsible for the next big game set in the Cyberpunk universe completed the project’s conceptual phase. As a result, Cyberpunk 2 – previously known under the codename Project Orion – has progressed to pre-production." This year's biggest gaming launch will be the Nintendo Switch 2 gaming console, which will launch on June 5, 2025. The device will be capable of handling complex and high graphics games. Cyberpunk 2077 will also be available to play on consoles once it launches.
