Team Asobi, the creators behind Astro Bot, were hoping to at least secure the best family game across the board. Instead, the game now holds a new record for receiving the most Game of the Year awards among all platformer games awarded across various events. Astro Bot closed 2024 with 104 Game of the Year awards to its name.
This record was previously held by It Takes Two, which was released back in 2021 and secured 88 Game of the Year awards. The developers behind the game, Hazelight Studios, are currently working on a new two-player platformer and will likely be back to take the crown soon.
Do note that the award race here is specifically between platformers, as other titles like Elden Ring and Baldur’s Gate 3 are running in frontlines with a substantial margin. Baldur’s Gate 3 has a total of 288 awards, while Elden Ring is the most decorated game of all time with 435 awards to its name.

Instant hit on release
Astro Bot came out of nowhere and blew everyone’s mind. The first reveal for the game had everyone thinking it might be another one of the tech showcases but quickly realising that they were getting a full-fledged game for the PlayStation’s adorable mascot.
While the game itself was quite fun, the various collaborations from other games and the effort from Team Asobi did take the player experience to another level. All of this was done with no fancy graphics and sold over 1.5 million copies.
Sadly, the game was released as a PlayStation exclusive, which makes sense with Astro Bot being the company mascot. However, the numbers would likely be a lot higher if the game was multiplatform. Hopefully, the fans will get to see another entry in the series.
