Team India coach Gautam Gambhir took to X (former known as Twitter) and penned down an emotional post for R. Ashwin. The 38-year-old announced his retirement from international cricket. This brought an end to a career that spanned for 14 years, having made his debut in 2010 in the white ball format.

Gautam Gambhir wrote, “The privilege of seeing you grow from a young bowler to a legend of modern cricket is something that I wouldn’t trade for the world! I know that generations of bowlers to come will say that I became a bowler coz of Ashwin! U will be missed brother.”

Former Indian skipper Virat Kohli was also quick to tweet out his feelings. Both Ashwin and Kohli were seen sharing a long chat, then hugging each other. Kohli’s tweet read, “I’ve played with you for 14 years and when you told me today you’re retiring, it made me a bit emotional and the flashbacks of all those years playing together came to me.”

The 36-year-old went on to write, “I’ve enjoyed every bit of the journey with you ash, your skill and match winning contributions to Indian cricket are second to none and you will always and always be remembered as a legend of Indian cricket. Wish you nothing but the best in your life with your family and everything else that it unfolds for you. With massive respect and lots of love to you and your close ones. Thanks for everything buddy.”

Cricket world tips its hat to modern-day great 

Dinesh Karthik, who has played lots of cricket with Ashwin, called the veteran star the greatest of all time (GOAT) in his tweet. “A GOAT retires, Well done on what's been an outstanding career. Proud to have played with you and definitely the greatest ever to have played from TAMILNADU. Much love and enjoy some leisurely time with family and friends.”

Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh wrote, “Congratulations @ashwinravi99 on a phenomenal cricket career. Your ambition as a test cricketer was admirable. Well done for being the flag bearer of Indian spin for more than a decade. Be very proud of your achievements and hopefully see you more often now.”

Ajinkya Rahane, who shared the dressing room with Ashwin, wrote, “Congratulations on an incredible journey, Standing at slip was never a dull moment with you bowling, every ball felt like a chance waiting to happen. All the best for your next chapter.”

Former England skipper Michael Vaughan congratulated Ashwin on his stellar career as he wrote, “Thanks @ashwinravi99. Have loved watching you play for India”. Vaughan has always lavished praise on the spin legend from India for his amazing talents. "

Veteran broadcaster Harsha Bhogle wrote, “One of the greatest to have played our game. I have enjoyed our interactions @ashwinravi99 and I can only wish you the very best in life. What you leave behind puts you among the best and there is a page in the Hall of Fame for you.”
