Today (May 31), the entire world is observing World No-Tobacco Day, the yearly celebration of this day is with the motive of raising awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco and the dangers of its consumption. The day was first created in 1987 by the World Health Organization (WHO) member states.

A resolution WHA40.38 was initially passed to celebrate World No-smoking or no-tobacco Day on April 7. However, later in 1988, a resolution WHA42.19 was passed to call for May 31 as World No Tobacco Day.

Meanwhile, in the last few years, some renowned cricketers have been seen in surrogate TV advertisements for Tobacco, either in the form of cardamom or some other pan masala ‘kind of’ ads.

With said that, here we’ll have a look at the 3 cricketers who have been featured in the surrogate ads of tobacco.

Virender Sehwag

Former India opener and now the commentator, Virender Sehwag is known for his funny image since he started commentating after the end of his active cricketing career. Besides his commentating stints, Sehwag has also been seen in a lot of TV advertisements for various kinds of products.

But what caught the attention of the fans and the cricketing fraternity was his appearance in the surrogate TV ads for tobacco. He has been seen promoting a tobacco product in a ‘surrogate ad’ while covering and surrogating it with the promotion of ‘cardamom’ or other kinds of ads.

Sunil Gavaskar

Former legendary India skipper and one of the all-time great batters, Sunil Gavaskar is famously known for his blunt opinions about the cricket teams, players and all the current happenings in the field of cricket. Gavaskar has been a role model for a lot of great Indian cricketers who served the national side for a long period.

But in the last couple of months, it was quite awkward for cricket fans to see the ‘legendary’ Gavaskar in a surrogate advertisement for tobacco. He was seen, alongside the former India opener Virender Sehwag.

Kapil Dev

India’s one of the legendary captains of all-time and World Cup 1983 champion, Kapil Dev played a pivotal role in entirely changing the dynamics of Indian cricket when he led the Indian team to a ‘historic’ title win 41 years back in ODI World Cup 1983. After the end of his active cricketing career, the former great all-rounder has been seen in multiple responsibilities, including coaching, commentating and a few other stints as well.

But what left the fans in shock was the legend’s appearance in a surrogate tobacco advertisement a few months back, alongside the former Caribbean cricketing great Chris Gayle.
