'I'll be very disappointed if Star Sports...' - Sunil Gavaskar slams the official broadcasters and Virat Kohli for questioning 'commentators' credibility'

Sunil Gavaskar didn't look very happy with both Virat Kohli and Star Sports; he felt that it is kind of 'questioning the commentators' who are supposed to take about the game.

Former legendary India skipper turned commentator, Sunil Gavaskar didn’t look very happy with Star Sports, the official broadcasters of the ongoing Indian Premier League 2024. Gavaskar is commentating for this very broadcasting company in the current edition of the tournament. Gavaskar came up with a strongly worded message for Star Sports with a Virat Kohli mention.

Notably, just a few days back, during the post-match conversations after the first match between GT and RCB in IPL 2024, Virat Kohli attacked the commentator or his critics who complained about his below-par strike rate in the ongoing IPL 2024.

“All the people who talk about strike rates and me not playing spin well are the ones who love talking about this stuff. But for me, it's just about winning the game for the team. And there's a reason why you do it for 15 years,” said Kohli during a post-match interaction after RCB’s 9-wicket win over GT.

“I am not quite sure if you've been in that situation yourself to sit and speak about the game from a box. I don't really think it's the same thing,” he added later.

'That'll be questioning all of us commentators' - Sunil Gavaskar about Star Sports

This very interview was played a lot of times by Star Sports yesterday, May 4, before the second game between GT and RCB in the current season. This act from Star Sports didn’t go down well with the former India legend Sunil Gavaskar and he didn’t hesitate to school both Virat Kohli and Star Sports on air.

“Star Sports needs to understand they've shown it enough times. Everybody got the message,” said Gavaskar on air on Star Sports.

“I'll be very disappointed if Star Sports shows it once more. That'll be questioning all of us commentators, not just these two (Matthew Hayden and I), those in the box, those earlier on. You're questioning their knowledge, their expertise,” he added later.

Furthermore, Gavaskar also came up with a lesson for Virat Kohli to understand the commentators’ point of view and take the ‘healthy criticism’ sportingly.

“Commentators questioned only when the strike rate was… if you have a strike of 118 and then you get out in the 14th or the 15th with a strike rate of 118… if you want applause for that, that's a little bit different,” Gavaskar said.
