BCCI announced India's squad for the Asia Cup 2025 and named Shubman Gill as the vice captain. BCCI could push for Gill as the T20I captain to be groomed under Suryakumar Yadav's leadership. Gill could be the candidate to become India's all-format captain when the right time comes to make the decision.

BCCI, as a board, has never believed in different captains for different formats as a long-term option. Currently, there has been a void in the Indian cricket team to find the right candidate to lead across formats. Since Rohit Sharma's retirement, India has had different captains in different formats. While Rohit is still the ODI captain, Gill has taken over the Test captaincy, while Suryakumar in the T20I captain.

Indian team's history of having a single captain across captains

However, historically, India was mostly led by a single person mostly across formats in its history. Since T20Is started, MS Dhoni was mostly the Indian captain from 2009 to 2016. After he retired from Tests initially and then from limited overs, Virat Kohli was his automatic successor and remained so till 2021.

After Kohli was done as the Indian captain, India had Rohit for the job. Even before the T20I era, when International cricket was all about Tests and ODIs, Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid remained the captains for a majority of the 2000s. In the 1990s, it was Mohammad Azharuddin for the most parts.

However, there was never a concept of split captaincy in Indian cricket for a fairly long time. Now that Gill is the Test captain, he could well be groomed as the future T20I captain. Given that Shubman has established himself in the ODI side, he will be the obvious future ODI and all-format captain of the Indian team.
