Starting on 3rd January, Australia will take on India in the fifth and final game of the Border Gavaskar Trophy. The match will be played at the Sydney Cricket Ground in the annual New Year’s test. One of the most distinct features of the game at the SCG is the ground is covered in sheaths of pink. Right from the stands to the players the usage of pink is quite visible.
The reason behind this is because is to raise more awareness for breast cancer. This was started in 2009 since the time Glenn McGrath’s wife Jane passed away. Since then the Sydney Test match is called the Pink Test. Australian players who wear the Baggy Green happen to wear pink caps. Jane McGrath passed away in 2005 when Glenn McGrath was an active player.
This will be the 17th Pink Test with Australia winning 9 times, losing just once to England in 2011 while six games were drawn. Michael Clarke smashed 329 not out during the 2012 Pink Test against India at the SCG. The next two Pink Test between Australia and India were drawn in 2019 and 2021.
Huge change brought ahead of 2025 Pink Test
On Wednesday, it was announced that the SCG Test starting on Friday will raise funds and awareness for people suffering from any form of cancer. The reason behind this move is to help people fighting the disease at the McGrath Cancer Care Nurse. SCG has always been a special place for many former stars but this year the initiative is set to add more intrigue.
Australian skipper Pat Cummins speaking to the media as quoted by Code Sports said, “Yeah absolutely. Even before I started playing for Australia, McGrath Day was always something really special for our family. And now each year seeing it get more and more support is really special.”
All the Australian players took some timeout to pose for pictures with the former Aussie great. In the last few years since the initiative bas begun the foundation has raised a lot of money. The latest initiative is a huge step taken by the former fast bowler who ended his career with 563 Test wickets and 381 ODI wickets.
