South Africa won the toss and opted to bat first. In the first hour of the match, the visiting side seemed to be at ease, as Ryan Rickelton and Aiden Markram went after the Indian bowlers and posted 57 runs on the board for the first wicket. However, Bumrah's brekthrough to get rid of Rickleton led to a massive collapse.

Soon, the star pacer dismissed Markram, while Kuldeep got rid of Wiaan Mulder and Temba Bavuma. When Bumrah dismissed Toni de Zorzi, the WTC Final 2025 winners were reduced to 120/5. They further collapsed badly in the second half of the second session.

In reply to it, India lost the wicket of Yashasvi Jaiswal, who managed to score just 12(27) before Marco Jansen dismissed him. However, KL Rahul and Washington Sundar steadied the Indian innings from there. At the end of Day 1, Rahul and Sundar remained unbeaten at 13*(59) and 6*(38), respectively, as India won the honors of having an advantage.
