In recent developments, the Board of Control for Cricket in India announced the invitation to applications for the position of head coach of India’s Men’s Cricket Team. The new head coach of Team India will take charge past ICC T20 World Cup 2024 as it will be officially the end of Rahul Dravid’s current stint as head coach.

Having said that, here we’ll look at the 5 contenders who might be fit to replace Dravid as the head coach of India’s Men’s Cricket Team. The list includes some of the former Indian cricketers who served the team for a longer team.

Here’s a look at 5 contenders for the position of India’s Head Coach:

5. Gautam Gambhir

Former India opener and two-time World Cup Champion batter has had great success as a mentor of late in the Indian Premier League. He was there with the Lucknow Super Giants franchise and helped them reach the tournament's playoff stage in IPL 2022, the debut season of the team, and the IPL 2023.

Furthermore, he took over the responsibility of mentorship with the two-time IPL champions Kolkata Knight Riders for the ongoing IPL 2024 and the team has now reached the playoff stage of the tournament. So, considering Gambhir’s success as a ‘mentor’ in IPL could be a big factor in deciding him as the head coach of India’s Men’s Cricket Team.

4. VVS Laxman

VVS Laxman

The former stylish Indian batter has been serving as NCA (National Cricket Academy) head for a long time. He is also nurturing the young cricketing talents of India at the grassroots level, including the U-19 level and other age group cricket competitions.

He has also been the stand-in head coach of Team India couple of tours against teams like Ireland and some other teams in the absence of the regular head coach Rahul Dravid. So, looking at his prior experience of coaching, Laxman might also be a good option for the position of head coach.

3. Justin Langer

The former Australia opener also coached Australia for a few years and enjoyed both good and ‘struggling’ patches with the team. Besides that, he is also active in the role of head coach with the Lucknow Super Giants franchise in the ongoing Indian Premier League 2024.

Considering a foreign coach option after a long time since Duncan Fletcher, Justin Langer might tick the boxes of requirements of BCCI as Team India’s head coach.

2. Stephen Fleming

Stephen Fleming

The former New Zealand skipper has enjoyed amazing success in the history of the Indian Premier League as the head coach of the Chennai Super Kings for almost one-and-a-half decades. He is also the most successful coach in the entire history of the Indian Premier League.

Chennai Super Kings have won five titles in the tournament’s history under the coaching of Stephen Fleming, becoming the joint-most successful team in the history of the tournament.

1. Ashish Nehra

Ashish Nehra

Besides his illustrious cricketing career, the former India speedster Ashish Nehra has attracted the head coach with the Gujarat Titans franchise in the Indian Premier League for the last three seasons. The Titans won the title in their debut edition in IPL 2024 under Ashish Nehra’s coaching followed by reaching the Final in the IPL 2024.

So, his success with GT might be taken as a case study for BCCI to appoint him as the head coach of Team India owing to his better understanding of the Indian players.
