Travis Head came out to bat after the fall of Steve Smith’s wicket for just 2 runs. Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Australia’s best batter caught behind by Rishabh Pant. The Aussie star then added a crucial 65-run stand for the 4th wicket with Marnus Labuschagne. Nitish Kumar Reddy broke the stand when he dismissed Labuschagne caught by Jaiswal.

Earlier in the day, Bumrah got the wicket of Nathan McSweeney who was caught by Pant for 39 runs. The 26-year-old is one of three South Australian players who are playing the game. McSweeney batted for 109 balls to become the second wicket to fall.

Ryan Ten Doeschate defends Indian bowlers

Former Netherlands skipper and current India assistant coach Ryan Ten Doeschate spoke to the media at the end of the 1st day. Doeschate defended his bowlers who picked just 1 wicket during the first day of play. The 44-year-old was quoted by CRICBUZZ as saying, "I know that the scores look like there is a big gap between the two teams but we still feel we are in the game and with a few tweaks tomorrow, we can get back in the game.”

The former Dutch skipper also praised Nitish Kumar Reddy for his amazing batting on day one. “We're so chuffed with him. "I think getting us to 150 in that first game was amazing. Just the way he went about his work. He is obviously playing his first pink-ball game. There's a little bit of work to do. He's very raw. He's done everything a young player could do in a very short space of time and we think he's got a very high ceiling,” he added.

Ten Doeschate was also asked about Ashwin’s inclusion in the team where he said, “I guess going into the last Test, we wanted to strengthen the batting and given what we saw of Nitish in the first Test, we kind of thought we could go with what we perceived to be the guys bowling the best spin at the moment, and we feel Ashwin is more likely to get wickets on these conditions.”
