India achieved a famous Test win during their 2014 tour of England thanks to Ishant Sharma. The Delhi pacer picked a career-best 7/74 that helped the Indian side win at the home of cricket by 95 runs. It was one of the most memorable wins in the Test captaincy career of MS Dhoni away from home.

Team India batted first and scored 295 on a green wicket with Ajinkya Rahane scoring 103. In reply, England took a slender lead of 24 as they were bowled out for 319 in their 1st innings. Bhuvneshwar Kumar took 6 wickets while Gary Balance scored a brilliant ton.

In the second innings, India were all out for 342 with an overall lead of 342. Murali Vijay scored a patient 95 and came off 247 balls after spending over 6 hours at the wicket. Ravindra Jadeja (68) and Bhuvneshwar Kumar (52) then went on to add crucial runs to give England a challenging total in the final innings.

Defending a total of 319, Ishant Sharma was at his lethal best in the final innings of the game. It was Ravindra Jadeja who began by dismissing Sam Robson for 12. This was followed by Mohammed Shami getting the key wicket of Gary Balance for 27.

Ishant Sharma ended the 4th day with the big wicket of Alastair Cook for 22. This was followed by the scalp of Ian Bell who saw the ball keep low and was bowled for 1. England began the 5th day with Joe Root and Moeen Ali.

The pair added 101 runs for the 5th wicket in over 44 overs as the Indian team began to get restless. Ishant Sharma during a podcast show had said how MS Dhoni advised him to bowl short. Just last ball before lunch, Ishant Sharma bowled a short ball to Moeen Ali. The England batter ducked and was caught at forward short leg by Pujara for 39.

Post lunch, MS Dhoni didn’t take the new ball and asked Ishant Sharma to bowl short with the old ball. The Indian skipper also set a field where Stuart Binny was sent to a deep square leg.

This move paid off as Ishant Sharma bowled a short ball from around the wicket. Joe Root couldn’t stop himself from playing a hook shot and Binny did the rest. The barrage of short balls didn’t stop as Ishant Sharma ran riot with the ball. James Anderson was the last man to fall as he was run out by Jadeja for 2 to signal a famous Indian. Ishant Sharma was given the man of the match for his efforts with the ball.
