Washington Freedom under the captaincy of Steve Smith won the second season of Major League Cricket on Sunday. The Freedom side beat San Francisco Unicorns by a massive margin of 96 runs. Steve Smith was the man of the match for his innings of 88 runs and splendid captaincy that led the Freedom to the title win.

Juanroy Drysdale was bowling the final ball of the 13th over with Steve Smith on strike. Having already conceded 20 runs off the previous five balls the right-arm pacer was under pressure. Smith and Maxwell were batting well and scoring runs with considerable ease at this stage.

Perhaps while trying to bowl a slower ball Drysdale let it go as it sailed over Steve Smith’s head. The Australian looked in shock and dismay as he ran down the other end for a bye. The resulting free hit saw Glenn Maxwell hit the bowler for a huge six as 28 runs were scored off the over.

Washington Freedom trounced San Francisco to win the title

Corey Anderson won the toss and asked Steve Smith’s Washington side to bat first. Pat Cummins got the first wicket when he dismissed a fellow Aussie star for 9 runs. Andries Gous joined Smith and added 38 runs for the 2nd wicket before falling to Hassan Khan for 21.

Haris Rauf got the third wicket of the day when he breached the defense of Rachin Ravindra for 11. At 86/3 the Freedom side were in a bit of trouble before Steve Smith and Glenn Maxwell combined to add 83 runs for the 4th wicket. Glenn Maxwell played well to score 40 runs from 22 balls with 1 four and 4 sixes as Washington ended their innings on 207 runs.

Marco Jansen struck two vital blows to dent the Unicorns while chasing a massive 208 to win. The South African first got rid of Jake Fraser-McGurk for 3 and followed it up with the scalp of Finn Allen for 13.

Barring the 20 by Carmi Le Roux none of the batters could put up a fight as Josh Inglis with 18 was the next best batter. In the end the Unicorns were bowled out for 111 runs with 4 overs left to play and hand Washington Freedom the title.
