WATCH: Steve Smith responds with magnificent century in BBL 2024/25 after getting unsold in IPL

Australia's star batter Steve Smith scored a staggering century for Sydney Sixers in the ongoing game against Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash League (BBL) 2024. He played an unbeaten innings of 121 runs off 64 balls, hitting ten boundaries and seven sixes. Smith batted like a pure T20 batter, hitting shots all over the ground. After scoring centuries in red-ball cricket, the player pulled off a brilliant knock in the shortest format as well. 

Thanks to his outstanding batting, the Sixers posted 221 runs on the board in the first innings. Scorchers' decision to bowl first after winning the toss backfired them as Smith hit a ton and got the support from captain Moises Henriques from the other end. Interestingly, Smith was unsold in the IPL 2025 mega auction in November 2024. However, this century is definitely his response to all the IPL franchise owners who didn't make a single bid on him.

Ben Dwarshuis also wreaked havoc on the bowlers, hitting three sixes confidently. He scored 25 runs off seven balls, contributing to the scorecard. However, Smith's century will be the highlight of the game for the way he batted and for the kind of shots he played throughout the innings. Scorchers' bowling was below par as they managed to take only three wickets.

Steve Smith will lead Australia in 2-match Test series against Sri Lanka

In a turn of events, Steve Smith will be leading Australia in the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka. Pat Cummins has taken paternity leave and will be back in the Champions Trophy 2025. Smith is handed the responsibility after consistent batting in the BGT 2024. He scored two back-to-back centuries in the series, helping Australia toward victory. 

Smith is one of the best and the most experienced batters on the side, and he deserves the responsibility given to him. Australia have kicked out India and Sri Lanka from the WTC 2025 finals contention and now will play against South Africa in the finals.
