Shreyas Iyer made a terrific return to India’s ODI side during the recent series against England. The 30-year-old scored 181 runs from three matches with two half-centuries, with his best of 78 coming in the final match of the series in Ahmedabad on Wednesday. The 30-year-old was also presented with the best fielder’s medal at the end of the game in the dressing room.
Vice captain Shubman Gill was seen handing over the medal to Iyer as the batter got a huge round of applause. Iyer took the catch of Mark Wood on Wednesday and also played a key role in two run-outs during the series. His best piece of fielding came in the first ODI as Iyer pulled off an incredible save in the field and went onto run-out Phil Salt.
It has been a great return to the team for the Punjab Kings skipper, who had a woeful time with the bat last year. Iyer then scored heavily for Mumbai during the Vijay Hazare trophy that earned him his national recall. The form shown by Shreyas Iyer will delight Rohit Sharma as India set their eyes on winning the Champions Trophy for a third time.
‘Got the opportunity to work on my technique’ – Shreyas Iyer
Speaking at the end of the game, Shreyas Iyer was asked about his batting. The 30-year-old said, “In the first game, I wanted to take the momentum after we lost two consecutive wickets. I tried to play the ball on its merit. I just back my instincts and tried to deliver. In the second game, I thought I would finish the game. And today, Shubman and Virat laid a great platform and that helped me to excel. I wish I could have got a hundred.”
Iyer was quizzed about what he worked on to get back into the team. The 30-year-old replied, “The break I got in between where I was working with the domestic team and I also got opportunity to work on my technique as well and especially the drop-in shots which got me singles, it’s not about cuts and pulls all the time, it's the balls close to the body when you get singles and that's more satisfying for me.”
The 30-year-old also added, “I think it’s great to win this series and carry the momentum into the Champions Trophy. You could see in the three games how every individual stepped up for the team. Getting those crucial runs and wickets at the right time was important.”
