Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 table toppers Gujarat Titans (GT) players were seen enjoying a game of football during a recent practice session. Shubman Gill was seen particularly enjoying the session which was filled with laughter. GT’s skipper was seen celebrating after he nutmegged one of his teammates and proceeded to jump on the player’s back. The 25-year-old was heard asking the cameraman if he caught the moment.
Titans had defeated Mumbai Indians to go top of the table before the league’s suspension. The Titans currently have 16 points from 11 games with a run-rate of +0.793. Their next match is against Delhi Capitals on Sunday which will be followed by two home games against Lucknow and Chennai.
Shubman Gill is also the top favorite to take over the Indian Test captaincy ahead of the England tour. The 25-year-old has been leading the race due to Jasprit Bumrah’s reported reluctance to play all five-games in the upcoming England tour. Gill, has been leading GT well after being given the captaincy last year post Hardik Pandya’s move to Mumbai.
Moeen Ali gives his views on India’s next Test captain
Former England star Moeen Ali said that Jasprit Bumrah should be the ideal choice for Test captaincy. During his chat with Sky Sports, the veteran KKR star said that Shubman Gill has been doing a good job with Gujarat and shown great acumen while leading the side.
Moeen Ali said, “I think it will be Shubman Gill. Ideally, the BCCI would want Jasprit Bumrah to captain because he is a very good captain, a good leader who has done it before. But because of his injury record, he might not be able to last the whole series. I think they'll give the captaincy to somebody who's done decently so far in Test cricket. Gill leads Gujarat Titans in IPL, so they've still got a very, very good captain, inexperienced, yes, but a good captain and good brain, but it'll be a challenge in the English conditions.”
Meanwhile, former India skipper Kris Srikkanth has urged Indian selectors to show patience before giving Gill the Test captaincy, Srikkanth during his chat with India Today said, “Who’s a ready-made captaincy candidate now? Shubman Gill? I don’t think he is still a certainty in the XI. You’re not handing the captaincy to KL Rahul or Rishabh Pant. Otherwise, you give it to Jasprit Bumrah.”
Srikkanth also added, “As of now, I think Bumrah should be the captain. If I were the chairman of selectors, I would make Bumrah the captain. And then I’d say, ‘Boss, play whichever matches you want to’. I’d then appoint KL Rahul or Rishabh Pant as vice-captain, because these are certainties in the XI. There’s nothing wrong with that. You can’t be appointing someone as captain just for the sake of it. I don’t know what the selectors are thinking, but this is my view.”
