In what seems to be a big piece of news for the Indian cricket fans, the star pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has decided to keep himself away from the contention for India’s Test leadership role. A recent report understands that star batter Shubman Gill and wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant are currently leading the contention for India’s next captain in the longest format of the game.

This entire turnaround of discussions and debates on Test captaincy unfolded in the Indian cricket corridors since the former skipper Rohit Sharma announced his Test retirement on Wednesday, May 7. Rohit’s decision left cricket fans and experts in a shock, but a few reckoned this was quite a bit of expected news as the selectors were already considering sending Rohit on the England tour only as a player instead of the team’s captain.

If a report in Sky Sports is to be believed, the premier Indian pacer pushed himself away from the captaincy race as it would be hard for him to commit to the availability for all five Tests on the England tour. Notably, he had already missed the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 due to a back injury earlier this year.

In the same vein, the selectors will seriously consider the questions on Bumrah’s availability in all five Tests. It will also compel them to give a chance to a player who will be available continuously for the team in the Test assignments.

Meanwhile, the reports in some major Indian media outlets suggest that the star opener Shubman Gill is being considered to be Team India’s next Test captain.
